Optical Illusion - Los monologos absurdos de Semion Semionovitch a la salsa titeres

DIOPTRIA Int. is an international coproduction of Barbara Bulatovic - Drustvo lutkovnih ustvarjalcev (Ljubljana, Slovenia), Miguel Delgado - Imago Mundi Titeres (Spain/Peru), Sébastien Fraboulet - Magic Marmelade (France), Thierno Diallo - Vision of Sound Productions.

OPTICAL ILLUSION is a hommage to Daniil Kharms, which started in 2010 and completed its first stage with two performances in Ljubljana's cultural center Španski Borci in November 2010.

The plot is based on Kharms's Optical Illusion, where Semion Semionovitch sees a man on the tree waving a fist at him every time he puts his glasses on, and eventualy determines that this must be an optical illusion. Further on, the perfomance incorporates several texts of harms and their different translations.

Barbara Bulatović, Miguel Delgado, and Sebastien Fraboulet are the actors/animators.

They manipulate individual parts with separate, distinguished characters re- and de-composing them into a large puppet, which represents the protagonist of the story. The music is composed by Thierno Diallo and played live by him on bass guitar and double bass. Actors/animators use their voices as an essential part of the music and soundscape. The performance creates a platform for reflection upon the characteristics of human's perception and understanding of reality, which are partial and often wrong although true if one believes.

Kharms's recognition form 1930s is still relevant and it seems to will have been remaining an unresolved issue for times to come. This problem is approached from the puppet medium perspective interposed with sound/music and light/projections. All three languages of the coproducers (Slovene, French, Spanish) and English are used in the performance. This makes it understandable to a wider, linguisticaly diverse audience and offers public exposure to every language and culture involved. The multicultural aspect is emphasized by performing dialogues in different languages.

DIOPTRIA Int. met in October 2011 to improve and extend the 2010 production and joined forces with Jaka Šimenc who took care of light design for performance in November 2011 in Ljubljana Puppet Theatre.
